Aruba vs Curaçao: Which Island to Pick, by a Host on Both

Aruba vs Curaçao compared by a host with a foot on both islands: beaches, diving, food, driving, prices, flights from the US and which one fits your trip.

Aruba vs Curaçao is the question we get from guests who have already decided on the Dutch Caribbean and want to know where to sleep. Ghislaine lives in Noord, Aruba, and our family runs a real estate business in Curaçao, so we are on both islands every month. Here is the honest comparison, category by category, with the answer at the end.

Aruba vs Curaçao: the one paragraph version

Aruba is the beach island. Curaçao is the diving and culture island. Aruba is smaller, flatter, drier, more American in its resorts and restaurants, and easier to do without planning. Curaçao is more than twice the size, hillier, more Dutch and Latin in feel, with a capital that is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a coastline of small coves instead of one long beach. If your trip is about lying on sand and walking to dinner, pick Aruba. If it is about reefs, a rental car and a city with real history, pick Curaçao.

How do the beaches compare?

Aruba has two of the best wide sand beaches in the Caribbean, Eagle Beach and Palm Beach, plus the snorkel coast at Arashi, Boca Catalina and Malmok, and Baby Beach in the south. All of them are free, public, with free parking. The water on the west coast is calm almost every day because the island blocks the trade wind. Read our Eagle Beach guide and the Arashi and Malmok guide for the detail.

Curaçao does not have a single beach like Eagle Beach. What it has is thirty or so coves along the west coast: Grote Knip (Kenepa Grandi), Playa Lagun, Cas Abao, Porto Mari, Playa Piskado where turtles feed by the fishing boats. They are gorgeous, often with cliffs behind them, and they are small. Several of the managed ones charge an entrance fee or a parking fee of a few dollars, and the best ones are a 45 to 60 minute drive from Willemstad. Jan Thiel and Mambo Beach near the city are built beach clubs with loungers and music, not open sand.

Verdict: Aruba for beach days, Curaçao for beach hopping with a car.

Which island is better for diving and snorkeling?

Curaçao, for diving. The reef sits close to shore along the entire leeward coast and you can walk in from the beach at dozens of sites. The Tugboat wreck, the Blue Room cave and the day trip to Klein Curaçao are the classics. Dive shops are everywhere and prices are reasonable.

Aruba is a snorkel island more than a dive island. You can swim out from Arashi, Boca Catalina and Mangel Halto and see fish and some coral within ten minutes of leaving your towel, which Curaçao cannot match for ease. The Antilla wreck, a German freighter scuttled in 1940, is the one dive that draws people here. Our snorkeling guide covers the spots.

What about food and nightlife?

Aruba has more restaurants per square mile than anywhere we know in the Caribbean, and the Palm Beach strip is a full evening on foot: forty restaurants, beach bars, casinos. The local food scene is real too, from pastechi windows to Zeerover’s fried fish on the pier in Savaneta.

Curaçao eats differently. Willemstad has the floating market, the Plasa Bieu food hall for stoba and funchi, and a Latin influence from Venezuela and Colombia you taste in the arepas. Pietermaai is the bar district, in restored colonial houses. Nightlife is smaller and more local. Aruba has casinos, Curaçao has a few but they are not the draw.

Which is easier to drive and get around?

Aruba. The island is 30 km long, the main roads are good, and you can live without a car if you stay on the Palm Beach strip, as we explain in Do you need a car in Aruba. Curaçao is 60 km long with the beaches at the far west end and the city in the middle. You need a car for the whole stay and you will drive an hour each way to the good coves. Both islands drive on the right and both are fine with a US or EU licence.

Is Aruba or Curaçao more expensive?

Curaçao tends to be a bit cheaper on accommodation and on meals outside the resort zones, and it has more apartment and villa inventory at mid range prices. Aruba resorts are among the priciest in the Caribbean in high season. Vacation rentals on Aruba close the gap, which is the argument we make in rentals vs hotels.

Then look at flights. Aruba has many more nonstop flights from the US east coast and midwest, and more competition, so fares are often lower. Curaçao has fewer US nonstops, mainly from Miami, Charlotte and New York, and seasonal ones from other cities. From Amsterdam both islands have daily KLM and TUI flights. For a one week trip the flight difference often cancels the hotel difference.

Both islands peg their money to the dollar at 1.79. Aruba uses the florin and takes US dollars everywhere. Curaçao switched to the Caribbean guilder in 2025 at the same rate, and dollars are accepted in most tourist places but not quite as universally.

Weather and safety

Both sit well south of the hurricane belt and share the same climate: 28 to 32 degrees Celsius year round, a trade wind, and short showers mostly from October to December. Curaçao is slightly greener and a touch wetter. Both are among the safest islands in the region for visitors; Aruba’s petty theft is mostly unattended beach bags, Curaçao has a few neighborhoods in Willemstad you would not walk at night.

Culture and history

Curaçao wins here without a contest. Willemstad’s Punda and Otrobanda waterfront, the Queen Emma pontoon bridge, the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Americas, the plantation houses and the slavery museum at Kura Hulanda give you two full days of real history. Aruba’s culture is in smaller doses: the Dande and Carnival traditions, the cunucu houses, Alto Vista chapel, the street art of San Nicolas.

So, Aruba or Curaçao?

  • First Caribbean trip, beach every day, no car, kids or grandparents along: Aruba.
  • Honeymoon with lazy mornings and walkable dinners: Aruba.
  • Divers, or anyone who gets bored on a beach by 11 am: Curaçao.
  • History, architecture, a city to wander: Curaçao.
  • Budget on accommodation, flexible on flights: Curaçao by a little.
  • Both: fly into one, hop to the other, seven nights total. Do Aruba second so the trip ends on the beach.

Questions people ask

Is Aruba or Curaçao better for beaches?

Aruba. Eagle Beach and Palm Beach are long, wide, soft and free. Curaçao has prettier small coves like Grote Knip and Cas Abao, but most are a drive away and several charge an entrance or parking fee.

Is Curaçao cheaper than Aruba?

Usually a little, mainly on accommodation and restaurants outside the resort zones. Flights from the US to Curaçao are often pricier and less frequent, which can wipe out the difference for a short trip.

Which island is better for diving and snorkeling?

Curaçao for diving: shore dives along the whole west coast and the reef drops close in. Aruba wins for easy snorkeling from the beach at Arashi, Boca Catalina and Mangel Halto, and for the Antilla wreck.

How far is Aruba from Curaçao?

About 120 km, or 75 miles. Small airlines fly it in roughly 35 to 40 minutes several times a day. There is no ferry.

Can you do both islands in one trip?

Yes. A week split four nights Aruba and three nights Curaçao works, with the short flight between. Most people find one island is enough for a first trip.
